Like many good stories, ours started with a simple passion for doing things right. Back in 2006, I was learning my trade as a carpenter under one of Southampton’s most respected craftsmen. Those early years taught me something invaluable – there’s no shortcut to quality work.
By 2010, I was helping run that same company through the tough times of recession. It was challenging, but it shaped our approach to honest pricing and reliable service that we still live by today.
When I founded CQR Carpentry in 2014, two friends joined me – Dan and Adam. We’ve known each other since we were kids, and they’re still with me today. That’s the thing about working with friends and family – you can’t hide from bad work, nor would you want to!
It wasn’t planned, but our carpentry customers kept asking us to fit their shutters. We’d see poorly fitted installations from big companies and think, “We can do better than that.” So we did. Word spread, and soon we were fixing more shutters than we were fitting kitchens!
2020 changed everything. During lockdown, we took a leap of faith and Ideal Shutters was born. My sister Louise came on board to run the office (and keep me organized!), while my wife Megan handles the accounts. It’s truly a family affair.
Today, we’re Hampshire’s go-to shutter specialists, ranked 10th most-reviewed in England. Not bad for a local family business!
